Yesterday in Disney history, the live-action film of 101 Dalmations was released in the States, back in 1996. We got it here, in the UK, two weeks later December 13th. Thank god we didn’t have to wait long to see it. I was really looking forward to this film, because it was the first time Disney re-imagined one of their animated features into a live-action feature, that included an iconic Villain. Cruella!
I was already a massive fan of Glenn Close, and when I first saw the trailer to the film, and found out she was playing Cruella DeVil, it was like they couldn’t have gotten anyone else better to be her. No one else could have brought Cruella to life, other than Ms Close. Even people who may not have watched the original animated film would know who Cruella DeVil is.
Cruella DeVil is one of THE most famous Disney villains that has been created over the years. Her clothing, her cigarette, her laugh, her phrases e.g. “Anita, Darling!” and those cheekbones!!! What a character! But in the animated film, you don’t know what Cruella’s job is, or anything really personnel about her, other than, she loves fur. And she is Anita’s Aunt.
Glenn Close may not have such distinctive cheekbones, but boy did she bring Cruella to the big screen. Everyone says Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly was the movie version of Anna Wintor, but I would say Glenn Close did it first with her version of Cruella. A controlled, confident, charasmatic, fashionista. A woman in charge, who knows what she wants. OK Cruella wants to kill puppies to make a fur coat, but apart from that…
But what is wierd, is that Disney is planning on making a film based on the character of Cruella DeVil, and you will never guess who is currently in the process of writing it?? Aline Brosh McKenna, who is known for writing The Devil Wears Prada!!! I’ve got a feeling this future Cruella project is going to be goooooood! I mean how amazing was Maleficent?!!
It will be interesting to see who they cast to play her. Victoria Smurfit did a really good job at playing Cruella in Once Upon a TIme, but I didn’t think she was a like-able evil. But the back story to the character was very different to what we have previously seen of the iconic villain. Maybe this could be the road the makers of the future project go down. We’ll know soon enough, but until then, Glenn Close will always be Cruella DeVil in my eyes. She stole the movie, and I believe the movie only did well at the box office, because of her performance.
“Oh, yes! I love the smell of near extinction!” – Cruella DeVil
