So I came across a very interesting article on facebook last week about the gorgeous Ellen Pompeo. If you haven’t heard of her, she is now the highest paid actress on TV, and she is the one and only Meredith Grey on Grey’s Anatomy. Surely you’ve heard of the her now? I’m confident you have, and you might be a fan like myself. I got into Greys while on maternity leave after I had Jacob. I was a late fan. I’d always wanted to watch it, but I didn’t have the right TV package to be able to.
I knew it was a hospital drama, and I knew it was popular. I’d heard the nickname: “McDreamy” and I recognised a couple of the faces from adverts. I am a huge fan of hospital drama. You can’t go wrong with a hospital drama, because you can have all the ‘real life’ drama with relationships, affairs, secrets, as well as seeing a bit of blood, a bit of gore, and getting excited about seeing my fav characters save lives under EXTREME situations.
So thanks to Netflix, and a year off work, I had time to watch the first 12 seasons and became a massive fan. So much so, I got my sister-in-law to watch it again, and my own sister to start watching it, who has now become a fan like myself.
Grey’s anatomy, is the best medical drama, in my opinion. I’ve watched Merideth Grey complete her residency, become a top, respected surgeon (recently winning the Harper Avery award) and sadly along the way, witnessing her personal losses while trying to be the best mum she can be. I LOVE her! I want to be her! The show is all about her, her character’s journey and growth.
Which brings me to this article I read… Apparently, according to Ellen Pompeo’s recent interview for “The Hollywood Reporter” despite playing the MAIN and TITLED character, it turns out, that she actually wasn’t that important to the makers and network (abc) of the show. Speaking about how Patrick Dempsey’s exit in tseason 11 and how it was a huge “turning point” for her, she said, “They could always use him as leverage against me —‘We don’t need you; we have Patrick’—which they did for years. I don’t know if they also did that to him, because he and I never discussed our deals. There were many times where I reached out about joining together to negotiate, but he was never interested in that. At one point, I asked for $5,000 more than him just on principle, because the show is Grey’s Anatomy and I’m Meredith Grey. They wouldn’t give it to me.”
My initial reaction when I first read this was “WTF?!” excuse my language but SERIOUSLY?! I was angry! Then I continued to read…
“So, what does it look like when he leaves the show? First, it looks like a ratings spike, and I had a nice chuckle about that. But the truth is, the ink wasn’t even dry on his exit papers before they rushed in a new guy,” Pompeo revealed. “I was on vacation in Sicily, decompressing—it was a long working relationship and it was a tumultuous end and I needed a moment to just chill with some rosé—and they’re calling me, going, ‘What do you think of this guy?’ ‘What do you think of this guy?’ And they’re sending pictures. I was like, ‘Are you people f–king nuts? Why do you feel that you have to replace this person?'”
It’s disgusting isn’t it?
“I couldn’t believe how fast the studio and the network felt like they had to get a penis in there,” – Ellen Pompeo
I can’t believe it either Ellen! Grey’s is the first show where I’ve felt the female lead is strong, interesting, intelligent, loving, relatable. I’ve grown to love the character more and more and she kicks ass! Now that I’ve read this article, I’m even more glad “Derek” is no longer part of the show, and the “so-called romance” they tried to create between Riggs and Meredith was not good, so I’m glad that didn’t go any further.
The show has the opportunity to just focus on this amazing character, and creating fantastic storylines where she continues to save lives. They don’t need to bring in another penis.
So for 14 years playing the main character who is also the name of the show, Ellen Pompeo has signed a deal earning her $20 Million a year, along with an executive producer title. She is now the highest paid actress in a TV drama series. GOOD FOR HER! GO ELLEN!
I want to read more accomplishments like this about my favourite actresses, or singers, rather than reading about what new diet they’re on, or if you can see their nipples through their shirt. Don’t you agree?
“Don’t let fear keep you quiet. You have a voice so use it. Speak up. Raise your hands. Shout your answers. Make yourself heard. Whatever it takes, find your voice, and when you do, fill the damn silence.” – Meredith Grey
